Nam Du - Stretching to evoke potentials
From Hon Chuoi, the group has travelled 50 nautical miles to Nam Du-an archipelago southeast of the island of Phu Quoc, including 21 large and small islands belong to Kien Hai District, Tien Giang Province. Nam Du is the largest island of this archipelago , 309m height , which housed 600 radar station covers a vast territorial waters looked into the Gulf of Thailand. There is also has a lighthouse atop the Big Island, which is considered the highest lighthouse of Vietnam thanks to being built high atop a hill 300m above sea level.
Only 11/21 islands of Nam Du archipelago have fishermen settled on,therefore many wild islets with charming natural scenery are still untapped. On the beach there are many coconut trees, some of which have existed 60-70 years. On arriving, visitors can catch snails on the rocks or dive in to the sea to catch fish, squid ... So the eco-tourism potentials are being strongly evoked which lead to the massive increase of tourists despite the distance.
Nam Du is also attractive by the legends: Bai Ngu on the west of Cu Tron island, legend said on the travel to avoid the Tay Son, King Gia Long had stopped there. there is still a well which always filled with water, the locals believe that it was dug when King was staying here , so it is called wells King. Folk's legend said in the 16th century, on the way to Phu Quoc to sale goods, there has been a clash between Netherland fleet and Chinese fleet. A few days later the hundreds of Chinese bodies drifted into the yard, so people call it the Bai Chet(the shore of death). Guests are also tempted to discover hill Ma Thien Lanh hill. Legend said that fairies often descended to the mountain - which is now called San Tien (Fairy yard). There are many ancient trees and purity caves that lead to the arrival of many hermits. Currently in Ma Thien Lanh hill,there is a opencast Buddha statue and the ancient traces that are recorded on a cliff ...
Nam Du archipelago is a great place for fishing and aquaculture with the amount of a hundred thousand tons / year and over 600 cages of fish, shrimp, crabs and snails. Because of being the main fishing ground , the unexpected No.5 storm has caused severe damage in this place with 5,000 deaths, 2,383 sank or disappeared ships
Currently, fishing and aquaculture in South Du strong recovery and create income for fishermen. Besides, with the potential of islands rich marine ecology, tourism is booming,many people believe that in the not too distant future, Nam Du will be a new Phu Quoc, Kien Giang, an ideal destination for vacation and discovery.
